Democratic Presidental hopeful Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez seems to not know what a sink garbage disposal is, or so she claims.
Yes, in New York garbage disposals are rare, but not unicorn rare. That is because until 1997 New York City had banned garbage disposals. The laws have since changed, but many of the older apartment buildings still ban them because of aging pipe systems.
Garbage disposals were banned in New York City for most of the 1970s because of the sewer system had been so aged. And because most landlords of older buildings have older tenants who have rent control that allows them to live in expensive New York for $300 a month, they do not want to dish out the money for a device that isn’t common.
But they’re not unicorn rare. They exist, so the fact that she considers this “bougie” blows my mind. Or is it just an act? Is she trying to prove that she’s so green, that she doesn’t even know how to flip a switch to turn one on?
