Many families that participated in the marathon event held by New York Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez were given a huge surprise when they found out their $30 registration fee went directly to the campaign contributions for the House member’s future campaigns. The event in question was advertised as a way of promoting Ocasio-Cortez’s ‘Green New Deal’ spending proposal, and based on that premise, many of the participants believed that any proceeds would be going toward helping save the planet in some way.
As it turned out, the “Family Fun Run” pocketed all the registration fees expressly for AOC’s coffers. Despite suggesting through a Facebook post that money spent to participate in the 5k marathon would somehow support the ‘Green New Deal’, the fine print on the event’s primary website stated that, “Registration fees are contributions to AOC for Congress.” These fees included contributions from children as well who participated in their own 1k marathon as unwitting campaign donors.
The event earned over $11,000 which the AOC camp will get to spend as they wish while the marathoners who participated in good faith that they were part of a greater cause will be left disappointed. Of the nearly 400 participants of the marathon one has to wonder how many would have joined if they fully understood where their money was going to.
What do you think? Should politicians be allowed to collect campaign contributions from people that do not understand they are donating to support a specific politician?
