Army Colonel Killed Helping Stranded Motorist

Col. Gregory S. Townsend, 46, served a tour in Afghanistan and two tours in Iraq. He was a Bronze Star recipient and a military colonel and had been in the military since 1996. Townsend has also received the Meritorious Service Medal, Defense Superior Service Medal, and the Joint Staff Commendation Medal. He has passed away being a good Samaritan, by changing a stranded drivers tire on a freeway.

Townsend deployed to Afghanistan in 2003 and 2009. He was recently assigned as a commander to the U.S. Army Quartermaster School at Fort Lee.

The loss of Col. Greg Townsend is devastating for his family and the Army. He was a dedicated leader and the most genuine man you could meet,” said Brig. Gen. Douglas M. McBride Jr., of the Quartermaster School.
