A staggering four of the five American cities that have the highest amount of unsheltered homelessness is in the state of California. Approximately half a million people are homeless in the United States, with nearly fifty percent of them concentrated in the Golden State.
A new report released by the White House Council of Economic Advisers showed that 47% of the total number of unsheltered homeless people in the United States reside in California. Homeless people are defined in this report by those who sleep in areas that are not intended for habitation. This would include living on sidewalks, in parks, or abandoned buildings, instead of shelters. Homeless people who are considered unsheltered account for more than a third (35%) of the overall number of the homeless population in the country.
The top four cities with the most significant rate of unsheltered homeless people are located in California: Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Jose, and Santa Rosa. Seattle, Washington rounds out the as one of the top five cities and is the only one not located in the Golden State.
Reports have rumored that President Trump and his administration might enact a federal intervention to address the overwhelming homelessness in the state.
However, when it comes to homelessness rates, Washington D.C. comes in with the highest in the nation with 5.8 times the U.S. national rate. Along with Hawaii, New York, Oregon, and California, these five states equal 20% of the overall population in the United States but account for 45% of the country’s homeless population.
The middle of the country has a drastically smaller percentage of homelessness compared to both coasts. Rising housing costs on the coasts are assumed to be one factor in this. Geographical areas with warmer weather also could be a factor as well.
But while California continues to wallow in skyrocketing rent prices, violence, and illegal immigration takeover, they did ban plastic straws, so they have that going for them. In 2016, the state banned single-use plastic bags, which resulted in 40 million pounds of less plastic per year. This seems like a reasonable thing, but the data shows otherwise.
Research done by a scientist revealed that in 2019, it inadvertently canceled out in-house recycling. Take, for example, grocery bags. Many people use plastic bags for multiple purposes and several times. The banning of plastic bags resulted in the astronomical increase of trash bags by a staggering 12 million pounds.
Other studies have compared the different life cycles of a single plastic bag versus that of a paper bag. Ultimately, it was the paper bags that had a worse impact on the environment rather than the plastic ones. The more successful method shown would have been to attempt to encourage people to use plastic bags several times and for multiple purposes. But that would require common sense and make actual progress for sustainable environmentalism, both of which Democrats are not interested in.
While almost anyone could agree that polluting the earth with plastic is not good, just to put things into perspective, out of the 8 million tons of plastic that end up in the ocean every year, plastic straws much up only a minuscule 0.025 percent of that.
So instead of tackling California’s massive problems that are destroying the state, top politicians in this state, such as Nancy Pelosi and Gavin Newsom, focus on making things worse.
Democrats have a plan for California, and illegal immigration and implementing liberal policies are critical factors in that plan. California claims the title for the first state in the country to give government-subsidized health benefits to illegal immigrants.
Governor Gavin Newson signed this measure into law that offers coverage to low-income illegal adults ages 25 and younger. They would qualify for the state’s Medicaid program. This is not an entirely new concept to the Golden State. Since 2016, children have been given taxpayer-backed health care regardless of their immigration status. This plan covers approximately 90,000 people thus far, according to state officials.
Almost all of the Democratic candidates currently running for president also embrace the idea of handing over health benefits to undocumented immigrants. AS the Trump administration continues to preserve our country’s freedom and control our immigration crisis, Democrats continue to do the opposite.
“If you believe in universal health care, you believe in universal health care,” Newsom stated. “We are the most un-Trump state in America when it comes to health policy.”
It is not just politicians who are all for giving non-U.S. citizen handouts. A survey taken earlier this year by the nonpartisan Public Policy Institute of California showed that nearly two-thirds of the state’s residents were in support of giving health coverage to illegal young adults. Republican lawmakers in California have fought back against the law, stating an abuse of spending healthcare dollars.
“We are going to be a magnet that is going to further attract people to a state of California that’s willing to write a blank check to anyone that wants to come here,” Republican state Sen. Jeff Stone said. “We are doing a disservice to citizens who legally call California their home.”
President Trump has also voiced his concerns calling Newsom’s plans unfair to American citizens. He says that we need to stop this, but an election will probably need to happen to do so.
However, in other parts of the country, Americans are far less accepting of this, according to surveys. As of now, most states do not make people living in the country illegally eligible for Medicare or similar health insurance programs.
The immigration fiasco does not just stop with taxpayers’ money, Gov. Newsom signed another bill that will allow illegal immigrants and non-American citizens to serve on state boards and commissions. Newson said that everyone should be considered based on their merits, rather than based on immigration status.
While both Newsom and Pelosi have bragged that they have made their state of California successful, the apparent truth shows otherwise.
California holds the records for many things in the country. Unfortunately, their first-place trophies are awarded for the most homelessness, and their willingness to forsake American citizens for illegal immigrants. But once again, thank God they banned plastic straws seeing as how that has solved all their problems.
