The H.R.5, Equality Act bill was passed which aims to amend the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to include protections for gender identity or sexual orientation. If this is made into law, this will allow transgender females- people born as men, be able to compete against other biological females.
Rep. Dan Lipinski is the only House Democrat that has not co-sponsored the bill, every other one has. Surprisingly two Republicans have also co-sponsored the bill.
Transgender athletes may have a devastating effect on female sports. For instance, this year a transgender woman who only had a year of training entered a woman’s powerlifting competition. He shattered a record for female weightlifters and won two gold medals.
Paula Radcliffe, a prominent marathon runner, said that transgender athletes have “certain advantages that women will not ever get.”
“I have nothing against anyone who wishes 2be transgender…However, I believe there is a fundamental difference between the binary sex u r born with & the gender u may identify as. To protect women’s sport those with a male sex advantage should not be able 2compete in women’s sport”, Olympian and silver medalist Sharron Davies tweeted.
