Department of Homeland Security Will Be DNA Testing Migrant Families

The Department of Homeland Security will now start a pilot program that will begin testing the DNA of migrants posing as families. This is an effort to curb human smuggling.

It’s called Rapid DNA testing, and all it involves is a cheek swab and can normally provide results within 90 minutes.

The pilot program is intended to run for two or three days at two different border locations.

The DHS reported that children are being targeted by human smuggling traffickers. The government cannot hold migrant children for more than 20 days, and because of that families, or groups posing as families, get released until their court hearing.

And ICE official did state that the information in the DNA test results will not be saved or shared.
