The Florida Legislature passed a Republican-backed bill that banned sanctuary policies that would have protected undocumented immigrants and required all law enforcement to cooperate with federal immigration authorities.
This bill was one of the most controversial ones this year as it was passed back and forth over the House and Senate for over two months. One section that was dropped was one that would have exempted the Department of Children and Families from its requirements.
Gov. Ron DeSantis is expected to sign it, “We are a stronger state when we protect our residents, foster safe communities and respect the work of law enforcement at every level,” he said.
Although Florida doesn’t have a sanctuary policy. Those who back the bill said it should give respect for federal immigration laws by preventing officials from refusing to comply.
