In China Christians are imprisoned for their faith. The Christians are so devoted that they are now memorizing Bible passages that are being smuggled to them in prison because according to a former prisoner, prison guards “can’t take what’s hidden in your heart.”
According to Hawaiian pastor Wayne Cordeiro talked about how on a mission trip to China, out of the 22 Christians he met in Hunan Province, 18 had been imprisoned for simply being Christians.
When Corderio began wondering what would happen to him if he were caught spreading the word of the Bible, he was told, “Well, you will get deported in 24 hours, and we will go to prison for three years.”
When the pastor wanted to hand out Bibles for the followers, he realized he did not have enough, but he was okay as some had already memorized the bible. “In prison, you have much time in prison,” said a follower.
The same follower told the pastor that all Christian material is confiscated but people smuggle in scripture written on paper.
When a Chinese Christan man asked the pastor to pray for him, Cordeiro, stated, “I will not do that. You guys road a train 13 hours to get here. In my country, if you have to drive more than an hour, people won’t come. You sat on a wooden floor for three days. In my country, if people have to sit for more than 40 minutes they leave. You sat here for not only three days on a hard wooden floor, in my country if it’s not padded pews and air conditioning, people will not come back. In my country, we have an average of two Bibles per family. We don’t read any of them. You hardly have any Bibles and you memorize them from pieces of paper. I will not pray that you become like us, but I will pray that we become just like you,” he said.
By 2030 China is expected to have the largest Christian population in the world. So in an effort to stop the growth of Christianity in China, authorities have been raiding churches and arresting them for worshiping “without the approval of the government.”
