Is The Taliban Capable of Peace…

On Wednesday in Afghanistan there was an attack in the heart of Afghanistan, a suicide bomber killed himself and 14 others. Along with injuring 145 people.

The suicide bomber targeted the capital of Kabul, right outside a police station on Wednesday morning. Claimed by the Taliban, they planned out this attack and took the lives of four police officers while the other ten were local civilians. Some women and children were killed in the bombing. There were images released showing people being carried out from the carnage on carts to nearby hospitals. The photos showed the expressions of the devastated, exhausted civilians along with the remains and debris from the blast.

“Again, a Taliban suicide attack in Kabul targets a civilian area that resulted in harming of so many innocents. Continued Taliban attacks indicate that they do not commit to peace.” Stated President Ashraf Ghani’s representative, Seqiq Sediqqi.
The U.S. and Taliban have been working to agree on a peace treaty in Doha. However, with these horrible actions, there is skepticism on whether or not the Taliban can be trusted to comply with a signed ink agreement.

The Afghanistan-born Zalmay Khalilzad, also the U.S. peace envoy said a final accord would be written up by the 1st of September. It requires 70 % of NATOs 20,000 forces, forces that are made up of 14,000 Americans, to leave the country. In 2018 it was the most lethal year in Afghanistan, recording over 7,000 injuries and close to 4,000 deaths. This year it was reported by the U.N. Assistance Mission to Afghanistan the that in the first half of 2019 that there has already been 3,812 civilian deaths or injuries.
