San Diego Police identified, 23-year-old American Travis James Eckstein as the person killed in the San Ysidro Port of Entry.
He was killed in a shootout with U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers. He was caught trying to sneak in two Chinese nationals.
Around 7:30 p.m. Travis James Eckstein fired multiple gunshots at border patrol agents. He was attempting to evade inspection and was killed in the shootout with CBP officers. When Border Protection looked into Eckstein’s vehicle, they saw two people “secrete” inside the rear of the vehicle. Officials identified the two men as Chinese nationals who did not have any legal status to enter the U.S.
Pete Flores, Director of Field Operations, made the following statement “The CBP officers risked their own lives to protect the public from this gunman. Human smuggling is always dangerous. This unfortunate incident demonstrates the total disregard smuggling organizations have for what they consider to be cargo.”
Eckstein refused to stop his vehicle multiple times when border agents attempted to get him to do so. It was when officers finally were able to block him off that he began firing his weapon out the window of his vehicle.
According to police, the seven border agents involved in the shooting were not injured.
