April 25th, 1976 one of the most patriotic saves was made in the history of Dodgers Stadium.
The Dodgers were hosting against the Chicago Cubs when two protesters suddenly ran onto the field holding lighter fluid and an American flag. While they were attempting to light the flag on fire, Vinny Scully the Dodgers announcer announced, “It looks like he’s gonna burn a flag!”
That’s when former Marine and current Cubs centerfielder Rick Monday stepped in. He managed to grab the flags away from the protesters and jog away.
When Monday came up to bat he was given a standing ovation along with the scoreboard flashing, “Rick Monday…you made a great play.”
Monday in fact still has the flag and uses it to raise money for military charities.
