Last week as the image of the young man and his daughter who drowned in the Rio Grande went viral, the President of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, commented that it is not the fault of the United States for the deaths along the border.
In an interview with the BBC, President Nayib Bukele stated, “People don’t flee their homes because they want to, people flee their homes because they feel they have to. Why? Because they don’t have a job, because they are being threatened by gangs, because they don’t have basic things like water, education, health.”
“We can blame any other country but what about our blame? What country did they flee? Did they flee the United States? They fled El Salvador, they fled our country. It is our fault,” he continued.
The family of the man and his daughter wants the world to see the photos as a warning of the dangers and perils that face those who wish to cross the border illegally.
“Well, my message would be, don’t try this. I know that in this country everything is very difficult, but our lives are more valuable,” the mother of the man told the BBC.
