Within two states, and only five days, three military veterans took their lives at VA facilities. This rash of suicides caused lawmakers to call for change.
29-year-old Gary Pressley was the first suicide. He was found inside a vehicle in the parking lot of the Carl Vinson VA Medical Center in Dublin Georgia. He was found with a gunshot wound and pronounced dead at the scene. He was struggling with mental health care and had even more difficulty after he was discharged after a car accident. According to his mother, “He told his girlfriend he was going to do it in the parking lot so that they could find his body, so somebody can pay attention to what’s happening, so other vets do not have to go through this.”
Unfortunately, twenty veterans a day choose to commit suicide.
The third veteran committed suicide on April 9th in front of hundreds of people in the waiting room of a VA Clinic.
