If modern-day politics shows us anything, its that we couldn’t be more divided. There used to be a time when both parties could agree on a few simple fundamental truths. That no longer seems to be the case.
America is a uniquely free country. The reason we have been able to uphold those freedoms while other countries have failed is due to the principles this nation was founded on. America’s government is meant to defend God-given rights that are inherent in every human being. Why are people worthy of God-given rights? Men and women were made in the image of God, and have intrinsic virtue.
Both parties no longer hold this view. To those on the far-left, human beings are simply a lump of meat directed by a series of firing neurons.
One of the most hotly debated topics between conservatives and liberals today perfectly illustrates this point. Abortion is the act of killing a human being. Scientifically, there is no arguing that fact. The argument then shifts to whether or not that human being has any value.
Conservatives make the case that abortion is wrong because those unborn children have inherent value. Killing them is wrong for the same reason murdering your fellow citizen is wrong. People aren’t merely sacks of meat. Human beings’ higher levels of consciousness, empathy, and capacity, for a reason, make their lives meaningful.
On the other side of the aisle, there is no such belief. Unborn children are simply a bundle of cells impeding the happiness of the mother. Sure, if she wants to have a kid, that’s great. But if not, why not kill it? Due to a baby’s lack of agency, they have no immediate contributions to society, and therefore no value.
Such a dangerous ideology has deadly ramifications. One such consequence is the rise in infanticide and infanticide-defending policies the left is now pushing.
Humans and Animals
The left’s crusade against the sanctity of life is by no means an unsuccessful one. Evidence suggests many young people are buying into this notion.
In a PragerU video discussing this very topic, Dennis Prager shines a light on this problem by sharing a simple study. When asked whether they try to save their dog or a stranger, two-thirds of college students would opt to save the dog.
This study’s implications cannot be overstated. More and more people believe that humans are simply another animal, no more or less inherently worthful than their own pets.
Animals are not as valuable as people. They lack the capacity to reason, have limited agency, and lack the level of advanced conscious though that truly makes humans unique.
One of the main reasons that humans are deserving of more rights than animals is that animals cannot be held responsible for their actions. They don’t commit good or evil; they react in response to various biological urges.
We have free-will, the ability to differentiate and then choose between right and wrong.
After abortion, the next most hotly debated topic from leftists is climate change. A common argument that continues to rise is that human overpopulation is a problem.
Many have fully bought into the Malthusian notion that human production will not meet the rising increases in population demand, leading to a scarcity of resources. This leads to such hyperbole as “human beings are a plague on the Earth.”
Such a conclusion only takes into account that humans are consumers. They are producers as well. The power of the human mind is so high that human ingenuity can be viewed as a resource in and of itself.
Many studies have concluded that the world’s population increase will cap around 9-10 billion. Afterward, the world population is expected to drop rather precipitously.
To suggest that additional human minds capable of ingenuity and the production of technological advancement is bad enough. To also say that having additional children is a scourge on the Earth is not only a disregard of human worth but also a philosophy that encourages mass shooters, namely the perpetrators of the El Paso and Christchurch shootings.
If humans have no inherent virtue, they have no inherent rights. This begs the question, where do human rights come from?
According to the left, the government grants you rights. Essentially acting as a sort pseudo-religious diety, the government in this sense dictates how valuable each individual is. If the government has the power to grant rights, it also has the ability to take those rights away. Or in some cases, such as the socialist regimes in Nazi Germany and Communist China, the government can take rights away from specific groups.
Conservatives instead believe that rights are God-given. The government cannot grant rights. Instead, its purpose is to protect the rights we are all born with. That is what the founding fathers intended.
In the PragerU video, as mentioned earlier, Dennis Prager goes on to explain how such thinking informed ideologies such as Nazism and Soviet Communism. As the Democratic party continues to sprint farther left, it becomes evident how these socialist philosophies became so popular in the first place.
Despite what many might think, the ideas put forth by the founding fathers are what has made America the greatest nation on Earth. ” We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that their Creator endows them with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness…” When the declaration of independence was written, it was of utmost importance that these ideas were stated.
As the left continues to pull us away from our founding values into naturalism and moral nihilism, we will begin to lose sight of how special we truly are.
If human life isn’t sacred, there are many logical reasons to end it. Whether it be for environmental health, animals’ quality of life, or merely the eugenic strengthening of the human race, many cases can be logically made for the mass murder and genocide.
However, if human life is unique, if every human being is inherently valuable, only then would such acts of evil be logically immoral. Learn about what makes you intrinsically valuable, and educate yourself so this never happens to our great nation.
