President Trump announced his new legal immigration system from the Rose Garden, the plan will make border security a priority.
“Our plan includes a sweeping modernization of our dysfunctional legal immigration process, the system will finally be fair, transparent, and promote equality and opportunity for all.”
According to senior White House officials, the goals of the new system are to treat border security scientifically rather than as a political issue. The new system will implement a merit-based legal immigration system as well as maintain a number of principles such as keeping the number of green cards issued per year at one million, protecting American wages, unify immediate family, and provide labor to critical industries.
The merit-based legal immigration system will assess citizenship eligibility by evaluating employment offers, pledges of investment of job creation, looking at educational or vocational certifications and evaluating English proficiency.
To avoid getting caught up with political debates, the White House plans on establishing a trust fund to ensure that there are financial resources available.
Trump also called for changes to U.S. asylum laws. There is currently a backlog of 900,000 cases as well as many Central Americans gaining permanent resident status by abusing the system.
“What I’m trying to do is stop the flow coming from Central America to regain control of our border and stop a humanitarian crisis that I think is just going to get worse over time. One of the most important things I can stress to you is that people are trying to get caught. They’re not avoiding getting caught. So when we talk about building a wall as Republicans, that makes sense to stop illegal entry into the country, try to direct people into areas where we have a better chance of apprehending them. That doesn’t work when the goal of the person is to find a Border Patrol agent and turn yourself in.” said Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham.
