The night before the May 31st shooting that happened at Virginia Beach that killed 12 people, victim Kate Nixon had discussed bringing a gun to work for self-defense. Unfortunately, the decision was not her choice as the city has banned employees from carrying firearms at work.
“Kate expressed to her husband concerns about this individual in particular, as well as one other person. In fact, they had a discussion the night before about whether or not she should take a pistol and hide it in her handbag — and decided not to, ultimately, because there’s a policy apparently against having any kind of weapons that are concealed in the building,” said Kevin Martingayle, the Nixon family’s attorney on the “HearSay with Cathy Lewis” radio show.
Virginia Beach forbids employees from carrying a weapon while working or on city property unless it has been authorized by a supervisor. According to the city policy, “The prohibition against possession of a weapon applies even if a member has a permit to carry a concealed weapon.”
The policy also explains one would not be violating the law if a person did bring a weapon but that they would be breaking the rules of their place of employment. “Employees who violate this policy will be subject to discipline, up to and including dismissal,” according to the policy.
President of the Second Amendment Foundation, Alan Gottlieb, believes that the best way to prevent and protect oneself to arm oneself. He tells Fox News, “Nobody in the media picked up on that. And quite honestly I would have to assume that’s agenda driven — a lot of people in the media believe that, you know, firearms are evil, so they wouldn’t report on the fact that somebody wanted to have a firearm to protect themselves.”
Right now members of the City Council are contemplating making it more than just a policy violation if employees carrying a gun at work, instead, there are some that want to make it a policy violation. However, in Virginia, cities cannot make it illegal for licensed permit holders to carry, which is why the City Council just recommends the state to create policies like the one that banned Kate Nixon from bringing a weapon to work.
Alan Gottlieb wants people to know that “A so-called “gun free zone” does not make people safer, because the only person who’ll have a gun is the person who violates the policy…it’s really a ‘Victim Disarmament Zone’. I get a lot crossing my desk of employees who work in state or city governments who are upset that they can’t bring a gun to work protect themselves and want to know if their rights are being violated. They contact the Second Amendment Foundation all the time.”
