Pete Sabera is a 91-year-old World War II veteran. Eight decades after he left school to help his family, he finally got his diploma.
Pete Sabera was in the eighth grade in 1940 when his father passed away, and he and his brother had to drop out to start working. They were working at a railroad before they enlisted the war effort.
They were both sent to Germany were Pete Sabera served in the military police as well as the infantry. They both managed to return home safely.
After the military, he returned to work for the railroad before he went to work as a patient aide at the Torrance State Hospital.
He received his GED alongside his grandson who will also be graduating in May.
“It’s a cool experience,” said his grandson, “It means a lot, considering we’re graduating at the same time, almost.”
