Philadelphia Man dead after stealing car with three children inside

On Thursday in Philadelphia, a 54-year-old man was beaten to death following an attempt to steal a car with three small children in it.

The man, who police identified as Eric Hood, was seen jumping into a vehicle in front of a local pizza restaurant while the parents were inside, leaving children- 7-month-old, a 1-year-old, and a 5-year-old alone in the car with the engine running around 10 p.m., according to a statement that the Philadelphia Police Department released.

The mother and father, who have not yet been identified, along with the help of bystanders, were able to chase down Hood after he got stuck in traffic, he reportedly tried to run away. That is when the father caught up with him, Hood then assaulted the dad and tried to run. However, with the help of other men in the neighborhood, they got ahold of him and started to punch and kick the suspect until he became unconscious. The carjacker was later found unresponsive by medics with severe injuries to the head, he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The nephew of Hood stated that his uncle has struggled with alcohol and drug abuse in the past and that this incident has come as a shock to the family, and that “it’s tragic all around.”

No charges against the father have been filed by The District Attorney’s Office. They are currently awaiting results from Philadelphia’s medical examiner’s office to determine a cause of death. The assault was captured on security video, and authorities are still searching for the other men involved in the incident.

The children in the car were unharmed.
