The Marine Corps had its first women fly an F-35 fighter jet, after extensive training she went through for four years. She went to several bases to train in Texas, Mississippi, and Florida. She is a commercial helicopter pilot from Idaho and became the first female to fly one of these supersonic stealth aircraft.
29-year-old Marine Capt. Anneliese Satz finished her training in South Carolina at the Air Station Beaufort this past June. Satz said, “The initial flight in an F-35 is by yourself, “The program thoroughly equips you for that initial time you take off and for each flight after that, it’s an exhilarating experience.”
Now, with more than 300 flight hours under her belt, the Corps said she’s set to pilot the F-35B Lightning II. She will be part of the Green Knights, Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 121, located in Iwakuni, Japan. The aircraft is intended to operate from short-field stations and near front-line battle zones. Following the completion of her F-35 syllabus, she went to survival, evasion, resistance, and escape (SERE) school and had a patching commemoration Aug. 2nd.
Women have only been permitted to fly in the Marines since 1993 when pilot positions were first made possible for women. The first woman to soar for the Marine Corps was then-2nd Lt. Sarah Deal. Who piloted a heavy-lift helicopter in 1995. In 2001, the first black female Marine pilot Capt. Vernice Armour piloted an AH-1W Cobra.
Earlier this week, another female Marine aviator made history, when she became the first female elected to fly the Corps’ other Joint Strike Fighter variant, the F-35C. First Lt. Catherine Stark will join the Navy’s fleet replacement unit, Strike Fighter Squadron 125, where she’ll fly the F-35 variant designed for carrier operations.
