During his time as President, one of the most unfortunate ecological impacts of Barack Obama’s policies and administration was the decision to greatly increase the number of protected and endangered bald eagles and golden eagles that can be killed by wind turbines before energy companies would face penalties. In the last several years this has led to a huge increase in eagle fatalities at the hand of wind turbines. President Donald Trump took some time to discuss this sad reality with a group of young conservatives recently.
The President used start imagery to describe the scene at the foot of a wind turbine: A bird graveyard. The President went on to say, “They kill the birds. You want to see a bird graveyard? You just go. Take a look. A bird graveyard. Go under a windmill someday. You’ll see more birds than you’ve ever seen ever in your life.” President Trump also remarked on the hypocrisy of criminal punishment for American citizens that kill bald eagles as compared to the ‘punishments’ that wind energy companies face for the same crime. “”You know, in California, they were killing the bald eagle. If you shoot a bald eagle, they want to put you in jail for 10 years. A windmill will kill many bald eagles,” the President said, “And you know what? After a certain number, they make you turn the windmill off. That’s true, by the way. This is — they make you turn it off after you — and yet, if you killed one they put you in jail. That’s OK. But why is it OK for these windmills to destroy the bird population? And that’s what they’re doing.”
