Look far and wide, but you will not find a more blatant case of politically motivated hypocrisy. The left’s diligent vilification of the Proud Boys doesn’t jibe with their unabashed praise of the ironically-named domestic terrorist organization Antifa. Well, it wouldn’t agree for the rationally minded, but the rationally minded are not who the Proud Boys are dealing with.
A bit of background:
The Proud Boys are a group of loosely affiliated, mostly pro-Trump individuals who came together as a reaction to increasing tactics of violence used by the left to stifle free speech. They are frequently associated with Gavin McInnes, a conservative pundit with a penchant for brash behavior and brutal honesty. McInnes’ wife is of Native American descent, but that has never stopped the left from labeling him and by association the Proud Boys as a far-right, “neo-fascist” terror organization.
In reality, the Proud Boys would have no reason to exist if it were not for the rise of Antifa. Sure, McInnes and his ilk speak strongly in favor of immigration reform, the timeless value of machismo, and take serious issue with the assault on Christianity. But make no mistake, the Proud Boys’ most significant reason for existing, and perhaps their greatest foil is Antifa.
You won’t see any honest exploration of who Antifa really is, and why it was so necessary for a group to counteract their violent, mob tactics aimed at shuddering an honest political and moral debate.
Alternatively, organizations like the Southern Poverty Law Center grasp at the most baseless claims about the Proud Boys to further their narrative that they are an extremist, “far-right” group with hate at the center of their mission. Here’s a taste of the SPLC’s “evidence” against the Proud Boys:
‘”Let’s not bullshit,” Brian Brathovd, aka Caeralus Rex, told his co-hosts on the antisemitic The Daily Shoah, one of the most popular alt-right podcasts around. If the Proud Boys “were pressed on the issue, I guarantee you that like 90% of them would tell you something along the lines of ‘Hitler was right. Gas the Jews.” (SPLC)
Nevermind that Gavin McInnes has gone on the record time and again stating staunchly pro-Israel views. According to the SPLC, some host of an “antisemitic” podcast saying “like 90% (of the Proud Boys)” believe in their hearts that “Hitler was right” should serve as irrefutable evidence that the Proud Boys are neo-Nazis.
It’s laughable, of course, but it passes as reality to the left. Anti-Proud Boy rhetoric is one thing. Making a right-wing group out to be something they’re not is par for the course. But the attacks against the Proud Boys have crossed the line from verbal persecution into actual prosecution.
On Monday, two members of the Proud Boys were convicted. Both 27-year-old Maxwell Hare and John Kinsman, 39, have been charged with attempted gang assault, attempted assault and riot charges. They currently are facing up to 15 years in prison, according to ABC News.
Look, we can’t live in a lawless society. Nobody is saying that the Proud Boys are above the law, nor that they can do no wrong. But Hare and Kinsman had to have been fighting against somebody, right? There are typically two sides in any brawl, whether it’s taking place on a baseball diamond or a prison yard.
Since we do live in the United States of America, the land of fairness and justice, all participants in the fight were investigated and brought to justice, right?
‘Footage from the incident showed members of the Proud Boys and Antifa fighting a block away from the GOP club. Four Antifa members involved in the fight were never identified, but 10 Proud Boys members and associates were ultimately arrested and charged.’ (ABC News)
Further research indicates that it was almost certainly a member of Antifa, not the Proud Boys, who incited the melee.
‘Journalist Shay Horse informed BuzzFeed News that members of the Proud Boys said the brawl began when one of the protesters allegedly knocked one of their “Make America Great Again” hats off.’ (ABC News)
Despite the left’s selective justice, knocking a hat off of somebody’s head is assault, plain and simple. Sometimes the law is not always black and white, but in this case, it is. Somebody not associated with the Proud Boys physically contacted a member of the Proud Boys in an intentionally antagonistic way. That’s assault, and it was the act that kicked off the violence. Violence for which the Proud Boys, not the inciting protestor, are being held accountable for to the tune of 15 possible years in prison.
If this seems mind-bogglingly unjust to you, you’re not crazy, and you’re not alone. Institutional protection of Antifa and simultaneous, show-boating levels of persecution of Proud Boys and similar groups has become modus operandi in Democratically-run municipalities.
N.Y. Governor Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio, two figureheads of the Democratic Party in the state, took time to condemn the “attack” by the Proud Boys. But their responses have nothing on the proclamations of district attorney Cyrus Vance, who spoke as if the convictions marked the end of mob violence in the city.
District Attorney Cyrus Vance declared in a statement. “As violent extremism rises in America, a Manhattan jury has declared in one voice that New Yorkers will not tolerate mob violence in our own backyard. These defendants transformed a quiet, residential street into the site of a battle-royale, kicking and beating four individuals in a brutal act of political violence.” (NBC News)
But…what about those four unnamed Antifa brawlers? And their brethren across the nation who routinely show up to free speech events and conservative lectures to incite violence and stifle free thought and demonstration? Surely the Democrats will disavow them and promise a similarly dogged approach in bringing them to justice, right?
Oh, quite the contrary.
Amid a violent illustration in the heart of Portland — a stronghold and breeding ground for masked Antifa thugs — Rep. Debra Haaland, D-N.M. painted Antifa as the heroes Portland needs.
In response to a Tweet by the president condemning Antifa, Haaland said this:
“It’s not surprising that Trump would side away from the folks who are the peaceful protesters working to safeguard their city from domestic terrorism. [I’m] just not surprised at all that the president sides with the white nationalists. That’s been his mode of operation since before he was elected president.” (Fox News)
Antifa is “peaceful protestors working to safeguard their city from domestic terrorism,” according to Haaland. The Anti-Defamation League and anybody who has seen a YouTube video of Antifa surrounding, suppressing, and often attacking journalists who don’t bow down to their anti-free speech agenda have a different view of Antifa.
‘These violent counter-protesters are often part of “Antifa” (short for “Anti-fascist”), a loose collection of groups, networks and individuals who believe in active, aggressive opposition to far right-wing movements.’
The left continues to embrace the violent, unhinged individuals that collectively comprise Antifa, and fervently prosecute those who act in response to Antifa, particularly the Proud Boys. So while Antifa is not the heroes that cities like Portland need, they are certainly the “heroes” that representatives like Debra Haaland deserve.
